Do You Like Metal?

August-September 2022

Schaumbad Freies Atelierhaus, Graz, Austria

‘Do You Like Metal?’ is a collaboration between writer Lea Sauer and curator Georgia Muenster, a columination of their work from the Styria-Artist-in-Residence-Stipendien (St.A.i.R.) program in Graz. In their respective practices, both deal with the urban landscape and the idea of flânerie, to be reflected in readings and a collective listening session on Tuesday, 27 September 2022. The presentation is to be accompanied by a new publication, inspired by Guy Debord’s 1957 pyschogeographic map of Paris and printed by Risograd. Presented in German and English.

The title of the series refers to the CD hawkers roaming around Hauptplatz: ‘Do you like rock music?’, ‘Do you like metal?’. ‘No, I don’t like music.’

The following sound pieces were produced in Graz, combining field recordings of everyday urban spaces with a collection of sounds gathered from across the radio spectrum. These include not only FM and AM radio, but also sounds generated by Bluetooth signals, wifi routers, weather satellites, and natural weather phenomena, all of which travel across radio waves.
